The questioner : He says, O esteemed...The Shaykh : The festival coincided with Friday, where the mosque imam was present and led the congregation in the midday prayer only. What is the ruling in that case without a sermon?

The Shaykh : There is scholarly disagreement among the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) regarding this issue, and the stronger position, which is indicated by the Sunnah, is that people pray the festival prayer in the festival prayer ground, and the imam establishes the Friday prayer in the Friday mosques. The imam says in the festival sermon: "Whoever attended this prayer with us is not obligated to perform the Friday prayer," and he prays the midday prayer in his home. Only the Friday prayer is established in the town.
So now we say: If Friday coincides with the festival day, the festival prayer must be prayed, and whoever attends it has the choice between praying the Friday prayer with the imam or praying in his home.
Second: It is obligatory to establish the Friday prayer in the town. So whoever attends it prays the Friday prayer, and whoever does not attend it prays in his home.
Third: The midday prayer is not established in the mosques on that day, because the obligatory prayer in the mosques is the Friday prayer, so the midday prayer is not established. This is the stronger position indicated by the Sunnah.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O esteemed Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit Islam and the Muslims through you.
