Excessive Oaths

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A questioner has some questions regarding faith. He says: “I always swear oaths, and as the common people say, ‘I bind people to my faith.’” Does this count as an oath of honor if he breaks it?

Answer:
A Muslim should not swear oaths excessively. He should guard his oath and not swear except for a valid reason, when he needs to swear, and he should be truthful in doing so. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever swears, let him swear by Allah, or let him remain silent.” So one should not swear excessively. However, if an oath slips off his tongue without intention, such as saying “No, by Allah” or “Yes, by Allah,” this is considered a vain oath for which he is not held accountable, and there is no expiation for it.
