Ruling on breaking the fast for the sake of hard labor

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q293: The questioner, A. M. A., from the Republic of Sudan and residing in Jeddah, says: I came to this country for work, and the month of Ramadan arrived, and I have no money with me. In this situation, I was compelled to break my fast for the sake of work. What is obligatory upon me?
A293: Work does not permit breaking the fast in Ramadan; because breaking the fast is only permissible for the sick person, the traveler, and the menstruating woman, and the pregnant or nursing woman if she fears for her children, or fears for herself, and likewise for the very old, decrepit man who is unable to fast. These are the people with valid excuses who are permitted to break the fast, and they make up the days from other days if they are able to make them up, or they feed the poor if they are unable to make them up. As for work, it does not permit breaking the fast. So the worker works and fasts. If his work is not compatible with fasting, he leaves that work and seeks another job that is compatible with fasting. Jobs are plentiful; he will find work that is compatible with his fasting. The conclusion is that the worker is not permitted to break his fast; because he is present and not a traveler,
and because he is healthy and not sick; and because he does not have a valid legal excuse from the excuses for which Allah granted a dispensation to the fasting person to break his fast. So he must work and fast, and he must seek from jobs those that do not conflict with his fasting. Jobs are plentiful. Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا (2) وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَحْتَسِبُ
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
, and the Muslims have continued since Allah made fasting obligatory, working and being occupied and fasting, not leaving fasting for the sake of work, knowing that they perform hard and tiring jobs, even though it is not reported from the history of Islam or from the righteous Salaf that they break their fast for the sake of work while they are residents and healthy. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
