Explanation of the supplications for opening the prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q247: The questioner, M. F. from Beirut, Lebanon, says: I am a man who prays and fasts, praise be to Allah. When I face the qiblah, I say: "I direct my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining to Him, and I am not of those who associate partners with Allah. Say: My prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are for Allah, Lord of the worlds." Is saying this from the Sunnah or not?
A247: This dhikr is not said when you face the qiblah; rather, it is recommended to say it at the takbir of ihram. This is because it is one of the opening supplications reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He would sometimes, when he said the takbir of ihram, say as an opening:[Al-An'am 6:79] , [Al-An'am 6:162] . This is among the opening supplications with which the Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessings be upon him) would open his prayer after the takbir of ihram. So the place for this is at the takbir of ihram, not when facing the qiblah.

This is because it is one of the opening supplications reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He would sometimes, when he said the takbir of ihram, say as an opening:
Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah."
إِنِّي وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَSay, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.
قُلْ إِنَّ صَلاَتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ(peace and blessings be upon him) would open his prayer after the takbir of ihram. So the place for this is at the takbir of ihram, not when facing the qiblah.
