Explaining the ruling on being negligent in performing the prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q265: The questioner, E. M. from Dammam, says: You see some people in Ramadan who are diligent in the five daily prayers, in the tarawih and tahajjud prayers, and in reciting the Qur'an, but when Ramadan ends, they abandon all of that. What is your advice for people like them?
A265: As for striving in Ramadan in righteous deeds, this is a good thing. Ramadan has a special status and is a great season. However, the Muslim is required to strive in good deeds throughout his entire life, in all months, because his life is a precious opportunity and he is heading toward a home that requires work. The reward in the Hereafter is based on deeds. Therefore, the Muslim is required to utilize his life in this world in righteous deeds, and to distinguish the days of the seasons, specifically the days of Ramadan, by increasing his striving in them. As for those people who are negligent and waste the obligatory duties and prayers, if Ramadan comes they maintain the prayers, but when Ramadan ends they abandon fasting and waste the obligatory duties. The striving of these people in Ramadan is not accepted. It was said to some of the Salaf: "There are people who strive in Ramadan, but when it ends they abandon the deeds." He said: "What a bad group of people they are; they do not worship Allah except in Ramadan." So these people are not accepted if they abandon the obligatory duties and the five daily prayers. However, if they have abandoned some of the recommended practices (sunnah), there is no blame on them for that, and acceptance is hoped for them in Ramadan. And Allah the Exalted knows best.

These people will not be accepted if they abandon the obligatory duties and leave off the five daily prayers. However, if they have left off some of the recommended practices, there is no blame on them for that, and acceptance in Ramadan is hoped for them. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
