Fatwa number ( 14424 )
Q: There is a woman who is an elderly woman, approximately over seventy years old, and she is currently blind. She is well-off and can afford the cost of Hajj. She wants to perform Hajj, and she has three sons. Is it obligatory for them to perform Hajj on her behalf given her old age and blindness, or is it permissible for her to hire someone to perform Hajj on her behalf in this situation, or is it obligatory for her to perform it herself? Please issue a ruling for us, may Allah reward you with good and benefit us with your knowledge.
A : If the elderly woman mentioned is able to reach Makkah by riding and she finds a mahram, it is obligatory for her to go for Hajj. If she is unable to reach it, it is obligatory for her to appoint someone to perform Hajj and 'Umrah on her behalf from among her sons or others, if she is financially capable. If she is not financially capable and one of her sons volunteers to perform Hajj for her himself or by appointing someone else on her behalf, that is permissible and it relieves her. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
