How to perform Hajj on behalf of another person
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 15530 )
Q3: I have a relative who passed away without having performed the obligatory Hajj in his lifetime. I want to perform Hajj on his behalf. How is the method of performing Hajj on behalf of someone who has died? He died due to an illness, may Allah protect us and you from it. This person is from my community, and I want to perform Hajj on his behalf for the sake of Allah, not seeking any benefit or asking for anything from him?
A3: There is no harm in a Muslim performing Hajj on behalf of his Muslim brother, whether he is a relative or not, and whether he receives money to perform it with or not. The method of performing Hajj on behalf of another is to intend to enter the state of ihram on his behalf. If you say, “Labbaik Allahumma an fulan” (Here I am, O Allah, on behalf of so-and-so), there is no harm. Then you perform the rituals with the intention that they are on his behalf. However, the proxy must have performed Hajj for himself first; because narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah , and it was authenticated by Ibn Hibban .
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man saying the talbiyah and saying, “Labbaik on behalf of Shubrumah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Who is Shubrumah?” He said, “A brother or relative of mine.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Have you performed Hajj for yourself?” He said, “No.” He said, “Perform Hajj for yourself, then perform Hajj for Shubrumah.”
