Question:
We move on to a message received from Riyadh, sent by one of our female listeners, (B.A.). Our sister has a number of questions, and she included a long introduction that took up a page of her letter, all of it praise and appreciation for the honorable scholars participating in this program. She listed her questions, which number more than eight. In her first question, she asks: Is it true that it is permissible to make up the white days such that a person starts fasting them, then something prevents him and cuts him off from fasting them?
Answer:
It is prescribed for the believing man and woman to fast three days of every month. If he fasts the white days, that is better, and if he fasts them in the rest of the month, that is also good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised fasting three days of every month and specified that the white days are better than the others. So if a woman or a man is fasting the white days and then gets busy with something else, they fast from the rest of the month, and praise be to Allah. It is not called making up (qada'); it is called fasting the three days. Because the entire month is a place for fasting, from its beginning to its end. If the believer, male or female, fasts the three days from the beginning, the middle, or the end of the month, the objective is achieved and the recommended practice (sunnah) is fulfilled, even if he did not fast them on the white days.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Do you mean, do you make them up if fasting them is missed?
The Shaykh: It is not called making up. She fasts three days of every month. It is prescribed for her to fast three days of every month, whether they coincide with the white days or not.
The presenter: Yes, may Allah reward you with good.
