Breaking the fast during the day in Ramadan intentionally
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second and third questions of Fatwa No. ( 5163 )
Q2: A man broke his fast during the day in Ramadan intentionally, another man broke his fast for three days in Ramadan intentionally, and a man fasted for one day only. What is obligatory for each of them?
A2: If any of these men broke his fast intentionally through sexual intercourse, he must make up the days he broke and pay an expiation for each day he broke. The expiation is freeing a slave. If he cannot find one, he must fast for two consecutive months for each day he broke. If he cannot do that, he must feed sixty poor people for each day he broke. If any of these men broke his fast intentionally by means other than sexual intercourse, such as food or drink, he must only make up the days he broke, and there is no expiation on him according to the correct opinion of the scholars. It is obligatory for each of them to seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him. Breaking the fast during the day in Ramadan by a person of legal age is one of the major sins if done without a valid legal excuse.
