Is one sacrificial animal sufficient for a single family?

Fatwa number ( 20671 )
Q: We are a family of eight people. We sacrifice eight sheep every year, praise be to Allah, slaughtering them all on the first day, which is the Day of Sacrifice, in order to attain the virtue of that great day. However, our father demands every year that the sacrifices be slaughtered over the four days so that the family can gather after the poor people’s share is distributed from them. We tried in vain to convince him, but he was not convinced. He remains insistent on his opinion, and the matter remains a cause of disagreement between us every year. Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you: should we follow his opinion, or should we continue as we are?
A: One sacrificial animal is sufficient for the people of one household, no matter how many
they are, and there is no need to slaughter a separate sacrificial animal for each individual. It is permissible to slaughter the sacrificial animal on any of the four days on which it is prescribed to slaughter the sacrificial animal, namely: the Day of the Festival and the three days following it. It is better for you to agree with your father’s request in order to unite the word, prevent disagreement, and cooperate in righteousness and piety. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
