The third question of Fatwa No. ( 15088 )
Q3: I am the father of four children and I support my mother. My income, praise be to Allah, is good, such that we live comfortably from it and there is a surplus that I save. I am still in confusion about what to do with this surplus. When I think about my worldly life and my children, I say that I must save a good amount of money for the future, as my children will grow up and their necessary expenses will increase with their growth due to the costs of education or marriage. Here, a witness from the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) comes to me, when he said to the man who came to donate his wealth, to the effect of: "It is better for a man to leave his family wealthy than to leave them poor, asking people for help." And when I read Islamic magazines and see the many calls to donate and the need of Muslims for money, I say: I must donate to help my brothers. Witnesses come to me of how the early Muslims did not save much for the future, and that a person should rely on his Lord and be certain that He is the One who provides for him and his children in the future as well. My question is: Can you tell me a word by which I can be guided, so that I avoid excess or deficiency? And is there a rule or a specific percentage that determines what a person spends and what he keeps ? May Allah reward you with good .
A3 : We advise you with what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised Hakim ibn Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him), where he said to him:Sahih al-Bukhari 1427, 1428 It is agreed upon as authentic. The upper hand means the giving hand, and the lower hand means the asking hand, i.e., the taking hand. As for the case of a feared illness, you are not allowed to donate more than one-third, provided that this is for non-heirs; for what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), from the hadith of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), when he consulted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the state of his illness, whether to donate all his wealth or one-third or half, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded by permitting only one-third. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

The upper hand is better than the lower hand (i.e. he who gives in charity is better than him who takes it). One should start giving first to his dependents. And the best object of charity is that which is given by a wealthy person (from the money which is left after his expenses). And whoever abstains from asking others for some financial help, Allah will give him and save him from asking others, Allah will make him self-sufficient.
اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى وابدأ بمن تعول، وخير الصدقة ما كان عن ظهر غنى، ومن يستعفف يعفه الله ومن يستغن يغنه الله
