The second question of Fatwa No. ( 18400 )
Q2: I intend to take guardianship of an orphan from among the orphans of Muslims, through the Islamic Relief Agency, and the guardianship will be in the name of my mother . Is this action permissible, and will the reward reach her? I hope for your answer, thank you.
A2 : It is permissible for you to give charity on behalf of your mother by taking guardianship of an orphan whom you know and whose need you know, and you will have a reward in this. Your mother will enter into the great reward mentioned for the guardian of an orphan. In the authentic hadith, it is narrated from Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I and the one who looks after an orphan will be like this in Paradise," showing his middle and index fingers and separating themأنا وكافل اليتيم في الجنة هكذا، وأشار بالسبابة والوسطى وفرج بينهما
Sahih al-Bukhari 5304
. And in (Sahih Muslim), from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
One who looks after the orphan whether he is his relative or not, I and he would be together in Paradise like thisكافل اليتيم له أو لغيره أنا وهو كهاتين في الجنة
Sahih Muslim 2983
, and the narrator, who is Malik ibn Anas , indicated with his index and middle fingers, and the meaning of:
whether his own or another'sله أو لغيره
is his relative
or a non-relative. A relative is, for example, if his mother, grandfather, brother, or other relatives take guardianship of him. Ibn Battal said in the aforementioned authentic hadith: "It is the right of whoever hears this hadith to act upon it, so that he will be the companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Paradise, and there is no rank in the Hereafter greater than that." And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
