The questioner : He has another question, asking: What is the ruling on what is called modern cosmetic materials that a woman uses to adorn herself, such as those applied to the lips, the face, the eyes, or the nails, provided that it is only for her husband and no non-mahram man sees her? I have heard that some of those who have a share of knowledge do not permit the use of these materials, even if it is only for the husband, because they classify it as imitating the disbelieving women. What is the definitive statement on this?

The Shaykh : We say that adornment is divided into two categories. One is permanent, lasting adornment, which is forbidden, such as al-washr, tattooing, and plucking the eyebrows. Al-washr is the splitting of the teeth, i.e., filing the teeth with a saw to make them beautiful. As for tattooing, the skin is pierced and then kohl or similar dyes are inserted from within, and it remains permanent. As for plucking the eyebrows, it is pulling out the hair of the face, such as the eyebrows and the like. All of this is forbidden and among the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed its doer. However, if it is of a nature that does not last, there is nothing wrong with it, such as adorning oneself with kohl, al-wars, and the like. But this is on the condition that it does not lead to something prohibited by the Shari'ah, such as imitating the disbelieving women, or if it is a form of tabarruj (display of adornment) where she goes out before non-mahram men, and the like. In that case, it becomes forbidden for the sake of the other thing, not for its own sake.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
This is a question from the listening sister, Umm Salihah, from Jeddah.
