Memorizing the Qur'an Without a Teacher

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20773 )
Q: Is it permissible for an individual to memorize the Qur'an from the mushaf without a teacher? If the answer is that it is not permissible, how does one make up for having done so in the past? And if the answer is that it is permissible, how do we respond to those who say that the Qur'an is not transmitted among Muslims except by mass transmission (tawatur) through oral recitation? And if you see another method that is more effective for memorization, please inform us of it.
A: It is obligatory to receive the Noble Qur'an from a reciter who is proficient in recitation, so that the learner perfects his recitation in the required manner. Reading it by spelling out the letters is not sufficient, as it is a path to error as long as one finds someone who can teach him the Qur'an. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
