A mentally ill woman: what is required of her family
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20860 )
Q: I have a daughter who is 28 years old. She has been ill since childhood, does not know how to pray properly, and fasts the month only sometimes. We have visited many hospitals inside the Kingdom and outside it, but we have found no cure for her. Finally, it was revealed that her condition is a deficiency in mental development. She sometimes helps her mother by making tea and doing some cooking. Some people told me that it is not permissible to eat food prepared by her hand because she does not pray . The summary of the inquiry: We ask your Eminence to clarify what is our obligation toward her and what is her obligation toward us from the perspective of Islamic law, so that we do not fall into what is forbidden, or cause her to fall into it, or cause ourselves to fall into it. May Allah guide you.
A: We ask Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for her speedy recovery,
and you must be kind to her, and command her to perform ritual purity and to carry out acts of worship according to her ability, and you will receive reward for that. There is no harm in eating and drinking what she has prepared if her hands are pure from ritual impurity. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
