Sheep that are fed for most of the lunar year, if they are for sale and purchase

Fatwa number ( 18271 )
Q: I have sheep, and among them are young ones. One gives birth and stays in the pen and does not come out of it. I spend on them from barley and feed from my personal expenses. Sometimes they remain in the pen until it rains. When it rains, I take them out and I pay their zakah if the lunar year has completed. But if the lunar year has completed and they have not been taken out, I do not pay their zakah, because they do not eat anything from the pasture. Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good. And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
A: Sheep that are fed for most of the lunar year, if they are for sale and purchase seeking profit in their prices, then they are subject to zakah as trade goods according to their value when the lunar year is completed. The start of the lunar year is from the start of their purchase if they were bought
with money in debt, but if they were bought with money present with the buyer at the time of purchase, then the start of the lunar year is from his ownership of that money with which he bought the sheep. And if they are for personal use and not for trade, then there is no zakah on them, because zakah is only obligatory on grazing sheep, which are those that graze from the pasture for the whole lunar year or most of it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
