What invalidates fasting and necessitates expiation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I am a man who did not receive an education, and I grew up in the desert. It happened that in Ramadan of a past year, about twenty-three years ago, I was in the city of al-Khafji . On a Friday of that month, I was furnishing the house I was going to live in. It was a scorching day, and because I anticipated the hardship I would face, I broke my fast that day. Then I brought the household items while I was not fasting. When I returned to the house, I had intercourse with my wife at the end of that day. It also happened that I had intercourse with my wife in another Ramadan, two years after that first one. I learned later that whoever has intercourse during the day in Ramadan is required to perform expiation by freeing a slave; if he cannot, then fasting two consecutive months; if he cannot, then feeding sixty poor people. I used to think
before this that whoever has intercourse during the day in Ramadan is only required to make up that day. After learning about the expiation, I fasted two consecutive months for the intercourse that occurred in the second Ramadan. As for the first one, where I had broken my fast before the intercourse, I am asking about it now: What is required of me, given the situation as I described it to your eminence? May Allah preserve you.

A: It is not permissible to break the fast during the day in Ramadan except for the excuses mentioned by Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), which are travel or illness. As for the hardship of work without travel, it does not permit breaking the fast. So what you did was a mistake on your part. You must repent to Allah, make up the day you broke your fast, and feed one poor person for delaying the make-up fast. You must also perform expiation for the intercourse in that day of Ramadan, which is: freeing a believing slave. If you do not find one, then you fast two consecutive months. If you cannot, then you feed sixty poor people. And the wife, if she was not coerced, has the same obligation.
