The Prayer of One Who Does Not Memorize Any Part of the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 17844 )
Q1: My father does not know how to pray, and I stand next to him in prayer and pray with him. I say the takbir and he says it, I recite al-Fatihah word by word, and he repeats it behind me until the prayer is finished. He is one who does not memorize anything from the Qur'an or anything else , and when we finish, I intend to pray anew and perform my prayer privately in the usual manner. I should note that I do not intend to be the imam or to pray with my father,
but rather I am praying and teaching him. Is that permissible for me?

A1: Teach your father al-Fatihah outside of prayer, and also teach him the dhikr for ruku' and sujud, the sitting between the two prostrations, and the first and last tashahhud. Then tell him to go and pray with the Muslims in the mosque, and he will learn how to pray, if Allah wills. Tell him that it is not permissible for him to be absent from the congregational prayer with the Muslims in the mosque; for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hears the call for prayer and and does not come (to the mosque for prayer), his prayer will not be accepted from him, unless he has a (legitimate) excuse.من سمع النداء فلم يأت فلا صلاة له إلا من عذر
Bulugh al-Maram 2:308
It was narrated by Ibn Majah and al-Daraqutni , and it was graded authentic by Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim , and its chain of narration meets the conditions of Muslim . Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about the excuse mentioned in this hadith, and he said: "(Fear or illness)." And in Sahih Muslim from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
A blind man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have no guide to lead me to the mosque." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Do you hear the call to prayer?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then respond."أن رجلاً أعمى قال: يا رسول الله: ليس لي قائد يقودني إلى المسجد، فقال له النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: هل تسمع النداء بالصلاة؟ قال: نعم، قال: فأجب
, and the hadiths indicating the obligation of performing the prayer in the mosque with the congregation for a man are numerous. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
