The first question of Fatwa number ( 16855 )
Q1: I got up for the Fajr prayer and found myself in a state of major ritual impurity. I am single and live with my family. I was shy to perform ghusl in the early morning because the house is small, so I prayed with tayammum and I was the imam. What is the ruling on
my prayer and the prayer of those behind me?
A1 : It is not permissible for a Muslim to pray while in a state of major ritual impurity, whether from wet dreams or otherwise, until he performs ghusl; because Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:6] , and tayammum does not suffice when water is available and one is able to use it. Shyness is not an excuse that permits tayammum. Therefore, what you did in praying with the people while in a state of major ritual impurity is a great error, and your prayer is invalid because you entered into the prayer while knowing that you were not in a state of ritual purity. It is obligatory for you to repent to Allah and repeat this prayer. As for the prayer of the followers, if they did not know your state until after the prayer, it is valid. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
