Praise be to Allah alone, and may peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner, the honorable member of the Da'wah Department at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Riyadh, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (1022) and date 16/6/1427 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is: I present to your Eminence this question that came from some of the brothers in America, and their question is: What is the ruling on men wearing a necktie (cravat) that is entirely made of silk, especially since this tie is not worn alone but is part of a complete outfit called a "suit" and does not constitute more than a small portion of the entire clothing? What is the ruling on men wearing this tie which is made of silk?
After the Committee's study of the inquiry, it responded that it is not permissible for males to wear natural silk; because Allah has forbidden the males of this Ummah from wearing silk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 803 It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148Sahih (Darussalam) It was narrated by Ahmad , al-Nasa'i , and al-Tirmidhi , who graded it as authentic. As for artificial silk, it is permissible to wear it; because it is not real silk, and because the original ruling regarding clothing is permissibility. As for the necktie, it is independent and not attached to other garments because it is separate from them; therefore, it is not permissible to wear it if it is woven from natural silk.
After the Committee's study of the inquiry, it responded that it is not permissible for males to wear natural silk; because Allah has forbidden the males of this Ummah from wearing silk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not wear silk (clothes). For whoever wears (them) in this life will be deprived of them in the Hereafter.
لا تلبسوا الحرير فإن من لبسه في الدنيا لم يلبسه في الآخرةGold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah, and forbidden to the males.
