Slaughtering animals during 'Id al-Fitr after Ramadan and for six days of the month of Shawwal as an offering to Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18244 )
Q: What is the ruling on slaughtering animals during 'Id al-Fitr after Ramadan, for a period of six days in the month of Shawwal, as an offering to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He)? In our village, everyone does this; that is, every household buys a sheep and slaughters it for this festival. They say this is a custom from our ancestors and fathers. They divide the neighborhood into six days, with a group of people slaughtering the animals and gathering around them each day, along with the women, sons, and daughters, each group separately. They eat all of it and never leave any of it behind. Did this practice exist in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or the time of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all), or in the time of our righteous predecessors? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good. And is it upon me
regarding the slaughter before I learned this fatwa, and if I never perform this slaughter for the rest of my life, is there anything on me? What is the expiation? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you a thousand times with good.

A: If the situation is as you described, that you have the custom of slaughtering these animals believing that you are drawing near to Allah, the Exalted, with them during 'Id al-Fitr, then this is a religious innovation (bid'ah). It is obligatory for you to abandon this innovated act. A Muslim does not adopt any of the things mentioned except what Allah, the Exalted, has prescribed regarding slaughter and offering during the time of the 'Id sacrifice, the sacrificial animals of Hajj, and the sacred sites. There is no consideration for what your fathers used to do in this matter, for customs that contradict the Shari'ah must be abandoned, and this is not considered severing ties with them, but rather abandoning innovation. It is obligatory for you to make it clear to the people of your town and those who do what they do that it is forbidden. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
