Slaughter of a sick animal to relieve it
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 20815 )
Q 3: I have camels, cows, goats, sheep, and various birds,
and they have fallen ill. Whether I treated them and they did not recover, or I did not treat them and I waited for a period while they were neither dead nor alive, the point is that they are breathing with very, very little movement. I heard from some shaykhs — not the great shaykhs, but the middle ones — that they say: slaughter them and do not leave them to suffer from their illness. Is this correct?
A 3 : If the sick animal is slaughtered for the purpose of eating it, there is no harm in that. However, if it is slaughtered solely to relieve it from the pain of its illness, it is not permissible; because it is property, and slaughtering it is destroying it, and the Shari'ah has prohibited the destruction and waste of property. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
