Q: I am a widow with four children, all of them young, and I seek knowledge to the extent of my understanding. Some girls come to me to learn some matters of their religion. Among these girls are three in the secondary school stage. My mother thought that I might suffer harm because of their coming to me, so she swore by the Great Allah that if they enter your house, you will never enter my house again. Meanwhile, she is advanced in age, currently 57 years old, and I go to her every day to check on her. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) decreed that the girls would refrain from coming to me for a period exceeding two months. Then I was surprised to find them knocking on my door, and one of my young children opened it for them, and they entered the house. I was inside and could not expel them from my house
directly, but I hinted to them about some matters. I wanted to meet them in another place, but they continued coming to me because they are at the beginning of their path to adhering to the Shari'ah and did not understand what I wanted to say. They are now coming to me and I suffer no harm from them, whether religious or worldly. So what is the ruling on my mother's oath against me, and on whom is the expiation obligatory if there is an expiation? Unfortunately, if she knew that I had done this, she would cut off ties with me in a harsh way that I cannot bear. What should I do? May Allah bless you, for this matter is troubling me and I am in distress. What should I say to my Lord when He questions me? Save me from the confusion I am in. May Allah bless you, rectify your conditions, and settle you in the highest Paradise. Amen.

A: It is obligatory for you to be dutiful to your mother, to be kind to her, and to obey her in what is right. Regarding your mother's oath, she must pay the expiation for breaking an oath. The expiation is: feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you do not find the means to do so, then fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
