A vow to fast for two months without being certain whether they are consecutive or not

Fatwa number ( 8994 )
Q: I was afflicted with a severe illness, and I thought it impossible to be cured of it, though nothing is impossible for Allah. However, Allah says regarding man:
and when evil touches him, he is ever despairing.وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ كَانَ يَئُوسًا
[Al-Isra 17:83]
. I was constantly supplicating to Allah to cure this illness of mine, but I included in my supplication that I said: If I am cured of my illness, I will fast two months. I am not sure now whether they are to be consecutive or not . Now, after Allah has cured me by His mercy and compassion, am I obligated to fast these two months? And is it obligatory to fast them consecutively?

A: Your saying: (If I am cured of my illness, I will fast for two months) is a vow, and a vow of obedience must be fulfilled; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.من نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه، ومن نذر أن يعصي الله فلا يعصه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam)
, and as for consecutiveness, it is not obligatory; because you were not certain of it, and the original state is non-existence. We advise you not to return to making vows; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited vows, and said:
It does not (necessarily) bring good (in the form of substantial, and tangible results), but it is the meant whereby something is extracted from the miserly persons.إنه لا يأتِ بخير، وإنما يستخرج به من البخيل
Sahih Muslim 1639c
.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
