Q: I have been residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since 1406 AH. My mother asked me to take her to the House of Allah to perform the obligatory Hajj, so I fulfilled her request in 1410 AH. I carried out all the necessary procedures, including the expenses for her Hajj to the House of Allah, and the arrangements for her travel and transportation from Egypt . Then, in 1415 AH, she asked me to take her again to perform Hajj and to perform 'Umrah in Ramadan, so I fulfilled her request. She performed 'Umrah in Ramadan and stayed with me until she completed the rituals of Hajj. I did not fall short in any request she made, such as buying gifts and items for her when she returned to Egypt . Then, in 1417 AH, she asked me to take her for a third time to perform Hajj. On this occasion, I informed her that I am unable to bear the costs of Hajj this time due to the scarcity of what I have and the many expenses of my children, who have increased in number. My mother replied that she is angry with me and that she will not be pleased with me until I take her to perform Hajj this time. He asks: Is there any blame on him for
that, and does she have the right to make this request?
A: As long as your mother has performed the obligatory Hajj and 'Umrah required of her, and then performed Hajj again as a voluntary act—this is a great favor. She has fulfilled what was obligatory upon her and has provisioned herself with good. There is no blame on her after that, if Allah wills. She should not burden you with what you cannot bear, and she should consider your financial situation and your inability to cover the costs of her travel and Hajj. There is no sin on you for not fulfilling her request as long as you are unable to afford what she asked for, and this is not considered undutifulness to parents, because you are excused by your inability to bear the costs of your mother's Hajj. And Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:286] And He the Exalted said: [At-Taghabun 64:16] You should make your mother's heart content with kind words, maintaining ties with her, being excellent in her treatment, and being dutiful to her. You should promise her the best regarding Hajj whenever you are able to do so. You have the reward and recompense from Allah for assisting your mother until she performed the obligatory Hajj and 'Umrah, and until she was able to perform Hajj voluntarily. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
