The first question of Fatwa number ( 21047 )
Q1: I own several shops for men's tailoring , and I have been in this business for about 10 years. I do not require the tailors to avoid letting their garments hang below the ankles, since they are free to choose, but I have placed a large sign inside the shop quoting the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that forbids letting a garment hang below the ankles and explains its punishment. Is there any sin on me for this work, and is the earnings from this work lawful? Knowing that one of the brothers opened a tailoring shop and stipulated
not letting garments hang below the ankles, and after a short period he closed the shop due to the few customers who accepted this condition. We ask Allah for guidance for everyone.
A1: There is no harm in opening shops for men’s tailoring and sewing if the clothes tailored and sewn in the shop do not contradict the Shari'ah; because this is from lawful earnings. However, if the clothes are made in the shop in a manner that contradicts the Shari'ah, such as letting garments hang below the ankles or otherwise, then this is a forbidden work, and the earnings obtained from it are forbidden. You must fear Allah and be content with what Allah has made lawful. Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
