The second question of Fatwa number ( 17797 )
Q2: People have become accustomed to calling one another by saying: "Ya Sayyid Fulan" (O Master Fulan) or "al-Hajj Fulan" (Hajj Fulan) when he performs Hajj to the House of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. Is there a legal ruling related to this matter?
A2 : It is disliked to say: "Ya Sayyid" (O Master) and "Ya Sayyidi" (O my Master) because of what was reported in the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicating the dislike of that. The prescribed way is to call him by his name or his kunyah, or to say: "Ya Akhi" (O my brother) if he is a Muslim. As for calling the one who performed Hajj "al-Hajj" (the one who performed Hajj), it is better to leave it off; because performing the obligatory acts of the Shari'ah does not grant names and titles, but rather reward from Allah, the Exalted, for the one from whom He accepts it. And it is obligatory for the Muslim not to attach his soul to such things, so that his intention remains pure for the face of Allah, the Exalted. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
