Fatwa No. ( 19531 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed the letter sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency the General Manager of the branch of the General Presidency for the Prohibition of Evil and the Commanding of Good in the 'Asir region , Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Ahmad , No. (600 \ 9 \ 24) dated 13 \ 2 \ 1418 AH, which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, No. (1225) on 24 \ 2 \ 1418 AH. His Excellency’s letter stated: We are sending you the attached documents concluding with the letter of the head of the Abha city authority No. (97 \ 29) dated 10 \ 2 \ 1418 AH, which mentions the existence of a men’s clothing tailoring shop named "Manaf." We hope that Your Eminence will review this and provide guidance regarding the permissibility of naming it with the aforementioned name.
The Committee reviewed what was stated in the letter from the head of the Shumasan Center of the AuthorityShumasan: Khalid ibn Sulayman al-Hadi, which read as follows: We inform you that through our review of the daily reports submitted by the members, a shop for tailoring men's clothing was observed, named (Manaf for Men's Tailoring). After researching (al-Qamus al-Muhit) by al-Fayruzabadi, Part 3, page 209, Dar al-Jil edition, it was found that this
name is that of an idol, noting that the shop has more than one branch in Abha city . After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered that "Manaf" is the name of an idol, and 'Abd Manaf ibn Qusayy ibn Kilab, the father of Hashim, was named after it, as his mother had dedicated him to this idol. Accordingly, it is not permissible to name oneself with the names of idols, such as: Manaf, al-Lat, al-'Uzza, Manat, and the like; due to the display, exaltation, and veneration of these idols involved therein, and this is forbidden. Therefore, the name of the shop must be changed to a name that is free of objection, in order to cut off the means of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and block the paths leading to it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
