Q 4: What is the meaning of maintaining family ties, what is the meaning of undutifulness to parents, and what is the right of the parent over the child and vice versa?
A 4: Maintaining family ties is done by being kind to relatives; through visiting them, extending a hand of help, and assisting them. The meaning of (undutifulness to parents) is disobeying them, causing them harm, and not being kind to them... and the like of this, such as severing the relationship.
And the right of the parent over the child is obedience in matters other than disobedience to Allah, and kindness to him in all forms of kindness, both verbal and practical. The right of the child over the parent is kindness to his name, and caring for him materially through financial maintenance and morally through guidance to the best of morals, and teaching him the matters of this world and the religion. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
