Sorcery and the Use of Jinn

Fatwa No. ( 13221 )
Q: I am a citizen of Egyptian nationality residing in Jeddah . I saw one of the brothers in Egypt , who is an educated man who reads the Qur'an a lot. I saw him take the Noble Mushaf after performing wudu' and reciting Ayat al-Kursi, then he would order those sitting with him to also perform wudu' and recite Ayat al-Kursi. Then he would bring a pair of scissors or a ring and place it in the middle of the Mushaf, and he would hold one end of the scissors with one of his fingers, and the other person would do the same. Then he would ask the Mushaf any question, and the Mushaf would turn in his hands to the right and to the left. For example, he would ask: Is so-and-so in Cairo now? If he is there, it turns to the right, and if he is not there, it turns to the left. This is how he commands the Mushaf, and the Mushaf actually and truly turns to the right or to the left according to the answer. I ask your Eminence to kindly clarify the legal ruling on this method, as I am not reassured by it, knowing that the answer is mostly accurate and correct.
A : The method mentioned is not permissible; because it involves sorcery and the use of jinn, and all of that is forbidden.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
