Q: What is the ruling of the Islamic Shari'ah regarding the fasting for expiation (two consecutive months), when the one who owes the expiation is ill, meaning: he fasted for some days and then became ill , is it permissible for him to fast, or must he break his fast until he recovers and then complete his fasting?
A: If a person is obligated to fast two consecutive months as an expiation for accidental killing, or for intercourse during the day of Ramadan, or for zihar, and then becomes ill during the fasting, he may break his fast and then complete the fasting after Allah heals him. His breaking of the fast due to illness does not break the consecutiveness of the fasting. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
