Fatwa No. ( 20736 )
Q: I am a married woman. After my sixth pregnancy, I began to be afflicted with some mental illnesses for which I know no cause. Because of them, I became unable to lead a normal life. I became afraid of everything and was confined to bed for the entire duration of the pregnancy. These fears and delusions end when the pregnancy ends, despite the absence of any organic illness, praise be to Allah. When some of my friends saw my condition, they advised me to try to induce a miscarriage by carrying heavy objects and jumping from high places. I actually followed that advice, and with the will of Allah the Exalted and Majestic, the pregnancy was lost in the fifth month. My mental state improved, and these illnesses and delusions disappeared. I felt that I had wronged this child, and fear of Allah the Exalted and Majestic and regret for what I did and what I disobeyed Allah the Exalted and Majestic in came over me. I wept bitterly, and I am still weeping and regretting what I did, even though about 12 years have passed since what happened. I am afraid of the sin I committed. After you have heard my story, I ask you to inform me: - Is what I did a sin, even though I did not do it except as a result of the delusions and fears that afflicted me? And how will Allah forgive me for this sin? - Is it obligatory for me to pay an expiation for the sin I committed?
I ask you to inform me about this so that I may be reassured and find peace, for I am afraid of His punishment, Glorified is He, and I hope that He will forgive me. May Allah reward you with good.
A: What you did in causing the miscarriage after the soul had been breathed into it is considered an aggression against a protected soul. Therefore, you must repent to Allah the Exalted, and you must pay the blood money for the fetus if its heirs demand it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
