The Ihdad: May she go out for the Tarawih prayer and perform 'Umrah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 19938 )
Q: We inform you that our father (may Allah have mercy on him) passed away on 7/8/1418 AH. Since our mother is in the state of ihdad, she has instructed me to convey her greetings to you and to ask you the following: First: Is it permissible for our mother to go out to the mosque to perform the Tarawih prayer at night with the imam, and likewise the Tahajjud prayer? Second: Our mother lives in a house, and two of her children live in two houses adjacent to hers. These three houses have doors connecting them from the inside, and they are surrounded by a single wall. Is it permissible for our mother to go from her house to my adjacent house or my sister's adjacent house for lunch, dinner, and to stay overnight? Third: If the people of the three houses move to Makkah al-Mukarramah to perform 'Umrah in the month of Ramadan, is it permissible for our mother to move with them? Fourth: Our father (may Allah have mercy on him) had another house where his other wife and their young children lived. When they have a wedding feast, is it permissible for my mother to
attend this wedding feast or go to them for the purpose of visiting or the like? Fifth: Is it permissible for my mother to apply kohl to her eyes for the purpose of treatment, not for adornment, and is she allowed to dye her hair and comb it? Sixth: Do post-menopausal women differ from other women in the rules of ihdad and avoiding adornment? Seventh: Is it permissible for her to drink saffron, even for the purpose of treatment? Since I have read your valuable letter regarding ihdad and explained some of the rulings to her, and she insisted on knowing your opinion, and because Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) has commanded obedience to parents, I have complied with what she ordered me to do. I hope you will graciously answer these questions in comprehensive detail and clarify what you see that might be difficult for her to understand. I ask Allah the Exalted to forgive our father and grant him spaciousness in His Paradise, to prolong our mother's life, to bless her provision, to rectify her descendants, to reward us and the Muslims with good, and to guide you to what is in the interest of the land and the people.

A: It is not permissible for your mother, who is in the state of ihdad, to leave her house for the Tarawih prayer and Tahajjud; she should pray at home whatever is easy for her, because this is not a need that permits her to go out. There is no harm in her going to your house and the houses of your brothers, which are enclosed with her house by a single wall, because they are considered one house. It is not permissible for her to travel to perform 'Umrah, because this conflicts with the rulings of
ihdad. It is not permissible for her to go to the house of her father's other wife for visiting or attending the wedding feast, because this is not a need that permits her to go out. It is not permissible for her to apply black kohl to her eyes for adornment, but it is permissible for her to do so for the purpose of treatment by applying it at night and removing it during the day. It is permissible for her to groom the hair on her head by applying sidr or the like that improves it, but not henna or perfume, due to the noble hadith prohibiting the woman in ihdad from combing her hair with perfume and henna. Post-menopausal women do not differ from other women in the rulings of ihdad, as there is no specific text distinguishing them. It is not permissible for the woman in ihdad to use perfume or use anything containing perfume on her body, clothes, or in food or drink, and this includes saffron. I ask Allah to help her to obey Him and avoid His prohibitions, to forgive your father and all the deceased Muslims, to make your consolation good, and to console you in your loss. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
