A Mourner Visiting Her Elderly Mother

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18875 )
Q: My mother is currently observing the mourning period following the death of my father (may Allah have mercy on him). During this period, my mother wishes to go to her own mother, who is advanced in age, to visit her at her home, as the grandmother is unable to go out due to her old age. Please note that my grandmother, who is my mother’s mother, lives nearby in the same residential area as us. The question is: Is it permissible for my mother to leave her home to visit her mother? Please note that my mother has previously gone to visit her mother several times during the mourning period. Is she sinful for doing so? I ask you, may Allah reward you for your generosity, to answer this question.
A: There is no harm in a mourner leaving her home to attend to her needs during the day, not at night, and visiting her mother who needs her visitation is among the greatest of needs, provided that this does not require travel. This is because it was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he granted a dispensation for mourners to gather during the day for companionship among themselves and return to their homes at night. So, from Mujahid he said: The men of the Day of Uhud were martyred, so their women came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said:
O Messenger of Allah, we feel lonely at night. May we stay with one of us, and when morning comes, we hasten to our homes? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Chat with one of you until you wish to sleep, then let each one return to her home.

It was narrated by 'Abd al-Razzaq and al-Bayhaqi in (al-Sunan al-Kubra). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
