Ruling on the travel of a woman in the waiting period if there is no one to keep her company in the house
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: From Abdulaziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, to the honorable sister, Umm M. S. A. - May Allah guide her to what He is pleased with, amen.
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
Your noble letter dated without [date] has reached us, may Allah guide you and make us and you among those who fear their Lord and are mindful of Him. It contained the question: A woman among you whose husband died in the Gulf, and you have decided to travel to Ta'if. Is it permissible for her to travel with you before she completes her waiting period? And is it permissible for her to watch television and listen to the radio? Your desire for a scholarly ruling was known.
Answer: If the woman mentioned was residing with you when the news of her husband's death arrived, she must remain with you until she completes her waiting period. If you travel to Ta'if, there is no harm in her traveling with you, provided that no one remains in the house who is suitable for her to stay with until the waiting period ends. As for her watching television and listening to the radio, there is no harm in her watching and listening to what is permissible; such as reciting the Qur'an, religious hadiths, and beneficial news, like any other person.
As for listening to songs and musical instruments, it is not permissible for her or for anyone else; because that is among the evils that harm hearts and morals, weaken faith, anger Allah the Exalted, and please Satan.
And if it is possible to be safe from watching television for her and for others, that is more cautious; because watching what is good in it leads to watching what is evil in it.
May Allah grant us and you and the Muslims well-being from its evil, and guide the rulers to everything that is pleasing to Him and beneficial for the Muslims.
As for the matters that are obligatory for the woman in the waiting period to avoid, here is their explanation:
First: Abandoning perfume on her body and clothes.
Second: Abandoning wearing beautiful clothes, and instead wearing black, green, or blue, or similar colors that have no beauty.
Third: Jewelry of gold and silver and other precious metals; such as diamonds, pearls, and the like.
Fourth: Abandoning dyeing with henna.
Fifth: Kohl; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the woman in the waiting period from all these matters.
As for cleaning with suds and soap, there is no harm in it. Likewise, her bathing for freshness and cleanliness is permissible. Likewise, her sleeping under the open sky on the roof or in the courtyard or similar places is permissible. Likewise, her leaving the house for her needs during the day is permissible - if no one is available to fulfill them for her. Likewise, her speaking to men if the need arises, in a manner free from suspicion - like other women - as she used to speak to them before her husband's death.
As for the belief of some common people that the woman in the waiting period does not speak to any man, this is something with no basis.
If anything other than what we have mentioned is unclear to you, please inform us of it, and we - if Allah wills - will clarify it for you and remove the difficulty.
And we ask Allah to guide us and you to beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, and to rectify our hearts and all our actions; indeed, He is Generous and Noble.
And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
