Marrying Off the Children

Fatwa No. ( 8493 )
Q: I am an elderly man, 61 years old. I was involved in a car accident nine years ago, in which my right leg was broken from the thigh and my left arm from the shoulder. I have undergone several consecutive surgeries on my leg, and there are several nails inside my thigh. My eyesight has weakened to the point where I am nearly blind, and only Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knows my condition. Regarding my social and financial situation, I work as a guard for the Ibn al-Kharif Company with a monthly salary of 2,000 riyals. I rent a residence in Al-Atiqah and support a family of three sons, all of whom are male. Two of my sons are the reason for my request for your fatwa. My eldest son is Muhammad, who is 22 years old. He asks me to marry him off, but my hands are empty of money. I enrolled him in school, but he refused. I asked him to rely on himself for his marriage, but he refused. Instead, he has been walking around with his friends day and night for the past six years. My second son is Saleh, who is 15 years old. He suffered paralysis in his left arm and leg. He is studying and has reached puberty, and he asks
me to marry him off. The third is Abd al-Hamid, who is 11 years old and is studying. Your Eminence: Please issue a ruling on my matter regarding the marriage of these children, given my poverty and the little I have, especially my eldest son, Muhammad. Am I burdened with sin? I know that the marriage of a son is the responsibility of his father , but unfortunately, I have nothing but my daily sustenance. Please rule for me, O Your Eminence: Am I burdened with sin, or is my conscience clear before Allah? Please rule for us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: If the situation is as you described, there is no sin on you and no blame for not marrying them off; because of His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:286], and His saying: [Al-Hajj 22:78]. We ask Allah to make your affairs easy and to guide you to what is good in this world and the Hereafter. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
