Fatwa number ( 11531 )
Q: My grandfather, my mother’s father, after divorcing my grandmother (my mother’s mother), married another woman and had two daughters from her. He passed away while she was still in his debt. When I visited my aunts (the daughters of this woman) and greeted them, their mother said to me: “Do not greet my daughters unless you greet their mother.” I said: “It is not permissible.” She said to me: “I am your grandmother on your father’s side, since I am the aunt of her—meaning: the wife of her father.” I ask for clarification of this, and may Allah preserve you.
A: Your grandfather’s wife on your mother’s side, other than your mother’s mother, is considered one of your mahram relatives. It is permissible for her to uncover herself in your presence and to shake your hand when greeting you.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
