Is it permissible for a woman to annul the engagement if the suitor is not committed?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14095 )
Q: I am a nineteen-year-old girl, and for approximately the last
two years, a twenty-nine-year-old man has proposed to me. I was new to wearing the khimar, meaning I was committed to the Islamic dress code, and I agreed to the proposal. However, through my verbal interaction with him, I learned that he is not committed to what Allah has made obligatory for us. I prayed for his guidance, but he did not return to the right path and did not become committed. I am now in doubt that my life will be in a state of prohibition, because I have informed my entire family that I want to annul the engagement, but they are opposed to this matter out of fear of people's talk, since the engagement period was two years, as I mentioned at the beginning of the story. Now, my question begins: If I marry him against my will to please my father and mother, will the marriage be lawful? What is the position of my family, and what is my position in this matter?

A: If the suitor is satisfactory in his religion and character, in that he holds fast to his religion and is adorned with the manners and morals of Islam, then the engagement should be completed. If that is not the case, then it is not permissible to complete the engagement, and it must be annulled. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
