Question 30 from Fatwa No. ( 18612 )
Q 30: A young man’s parents asked him to marry a girl he does not want, and if he does not marry her, they will not forgive him. Is it obligatory for him to marry that girl, whom he cannot bear, in order to avoid the lack of forgiveness from one or both of his parents, and to seek their satisfaction? Is it permissible to have a customary marriage where the contract is known only to a few people (in secret)? Is the husband obligated to inform his parents of his marriage, or is it not obligatory for him to do so?
A 30: First: Obedience to parents is obligatory, as is being dutiful to them and treating them with kindness
toward them, due to the texts of the Qur'an and the Sunnah regarding this. However, obeying them in marrying a specific woman whom the son does not want is not obligatory; because if he obeys them, he fears that the marriage may fail, that there may be no affection, and that divorce may occur. But the son must, in all circumstances, consider their feelings through good methods that reassure their hearts, and he should avoid clashing with them by his opinion, and beware of harsh methods, while proceeding with what he sees as a stronger benefit; because he is more aware of his own affairs, especially his own self. Second: Marriage in Islam is based on public announcement, so it is not permissible to hide it. And the permissibility of its announcement has great rulings that are not hidden, the most important of which is distinguishing it from fornication, for fornication is what is hidden and kept secret. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
