Q: I have a problem I would like to present to you. It is summarized as follows: I got married about a year ago. The woman I married did not wear the proper Islamic clothing; she wore short clothes, showed her hair, and did not cover her face. However, I had hope that this appearance would change after marrying her, and we agreed on this. Indeed, with the help of Allah, the marriage took place, and I brought her to live with me in Riyadh . Allah opened her heart, and she began to wear long clothes with an abaya over them, and she began to cover her hair. But the problem here is that after a period of time, she began to rebel against this clothing and hate it, although she continues to wear it, not being convinced by it, and it appears to be to please me. The problem here is that she does not want to cover her face, and she still puts some adornment on her face when going out of the house. Many problems have occurred between me and her because of her not covering her face and wearing adornment. Her excuse for this is that Islam does not require a woman to cover her face. This is from one side, and from another side
she says that she was accustomed to wearing short clothes and not covering her hair, and that she will take time to transform herself into wearing the proper Islamic clothing. But after a year of discussion and persuasion, she has not been convinced yet. A long discussion took place between me and her, me trying to persuade her, but to no avail. Finally, her excuse was that she alone would bear the sin. When I told her that I am responsible for her before Allah, she said that every person is responsible for themselves, and that I will not bear sins on her behalf before Allah. It is very difficult to convince her of that. Therefore, I wished to write to your eminence, may Allah preserve you, asking you to reply to my letter in writing on this topic, so that she can read the ruling of the Shari'ah and religion through the scholars, since she is not convinced by my words. But I have another question: If she insists on her position and continues to put adornment on her face when going out and not covering her face, what should I do with her? What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding this insistence and stubbornness? I am a man who fears Allah, and I work hard to implement what came in the Book and the Sunnah, because I fear that when we return to Egypt she will return to wearing short clothes again. And I have never been short in advising her by all means; sometimes with books, sometimes with the cassettes of the noble scholars on this topic, and with the interviews conducted via radio and television on this topic. All of this did not convince this woman. So what
is the action to take with her? Inform us, may Allah reward you, and may He prolong your life and benefit Islam and the Muslims through you.
A: It is obligatory in the Shari'ah for a woman to observe the proper hijab from foreign men, including the face and the hands. If she insists on this evil of going out uncovered with adornment, after her advice has been repeated and a period has passed showing that it is difficult for her to respond to what is obligatory in the Shari'ah, then parting with her is better than keeping her; because such a woman is not suitable as an obedient wife, nor as a mother who raises her child with sincere upbringing. And Allah will replace you with someone better than her; for His saying, the Exalted:[At-Talaq 65:2-3] the verse, and His saying, Mighty and Majestic: [At-Talaq 65:4]. May Allah guide you, facilitate your affairs, and reform your wife, and inspire her with wisdom. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
