Q: I would like to inform Your Eminence that a question from one of the sisters in the Arab Republic of Egypt was attached to my question, and its text is as follows: My mother passed away before my grandfather. Do I have an inheritance alongside my maternal uncle and maternal aunt?
A: If your mother died before your grandfather and he left behind a son and a daughter, then your mother has no share because she predeceased her father. Your grandfather's inheritance goes to his son and daughter, who are your maternal uncle and maternal aunt. You do not inherit from your grandfather along with them because you are among the relatives by blood (dhawu al-aram) and do not inherit in the presence of those with fixed shares and residuary heirs, except for spouses. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
