Fatwa number ( 14571 )
Q: I am a young man who wishes to get married during the summer vacation this year, if Allah wills and grants success. Given that there is an old agreement among the members of our tribe, the text of which is: (All members of the tribe agreed that if any son of the tribe wishes to marry, it is incumbent upon every one who has previously married to pay a sum of five hundred riyals as assistance for this groom, on the condition that he participates with them in the future, and in the first marriage, in paying a sum of five hundred riyals, and so on
the agreement continues with all the sons of the tribe, and with everyone who wishes to marry from among them. It is known that some of those who receive this assistance are negligent in prayer, do not pray Fajr in the mosque, and commit some matters contrary to the Shari'ah; such as letting the garment hang below the ankles, shaving the beard, and smoking. They spend this assistance on renting a palace for celebrations, and bringing in women drummers who beat the hand drum for the women, and they take a sum of two thousand riyals, and what results from that of some evils, such as the groom entering upon the women with his wife, and other evils. My question: Is it permissible to take this assistance to help me with the marriage and spend it in matters that are permissible by the Shari'ah? Knowing that if I take this assistance, I will participate with them in the future according to the agreement in assisting the one who wishes to marry, and it may be one of those whose condition was mentioned above. And what is the solution in your view so that this agreement remains and the tribe remains united? I am awaiting your fatwa and guidance at the earliest possible time. May Allah guide you and set your steps aright.

A: If the matter is as mentioned, it is not permissible. As for one who wishes to assist his brother, or his relative, or someone else, without compulsion or exchange from the one he assists, there is no harm.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
