The questioner : I am consistent in reading the Noble Qur'an and the noble Prophetic hadiths, but I often forget and am unable to memorize. Is there a sin on me for this? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : There is no doubt that it is a blessing from Allah upon the servant that Allah the Exalted grants him success in memorizing His Book by heart, because of the great benefits in that. If a person is a memorizer of the Book of Allah by heart, he is able to recite it in every state, except in the places where reciting the Qur'an is not appropriate, or in the states where reading the Qur'an is not possible, such as the state of major ritual impurity. And if he is a memorizer of the Qur'an by heart, he is able to reflect on its meanings and to remember it at all times. For this reason, a person should memorize the Book of Allah by heart as much as he is able. And if he strives to do so but forgets some of it without negligence, then there is no blame on him for that.
It is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led his Companions in prayer one night, and he recited and omitted a verse from the Qur'an that he had forgotten. So Abu ibn Ka'b reminded him after his closing salam, and he said: If a person forgets something of what he has memorized from the Book of Allah without belittling it, then there is no blame on him for that, because it is of the nature of humans. I mean: that a person's forgetting of what he has memorized is a natural matter, and a person is not blamed for it, except what is due to belittling and indifference; that has another status.
