Fatwa number ( 518 )
Q: My father performed Hajj in a past year, and he was severely ill and was unable to enter the state of ihram. What is obligatory upon him?
A: If a pilgrim enters the state of ihram wearing his regular clothes out of necessity due to cold, illness, or the like, he is permitted to do so by the Shari'ah. It is obligatory for him, with regard to wearing sewn garments, to fast for three days, or to feed six poor people; each poor person receives half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the land, or to slaughter a sheep that is acceptable as a sacrificial animal. The same ruling applies if he covers his head. Fasting is valid anywhere, but the feeding and the sheep must be in the Makkah sanctuary. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
