Fasting of a patient with intestinal disease

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 2129 )
Q: Allah has afflicted me with intestinal disease, and I underwent five operations as a result of a stomach ulcer. The illness became severe, and I stayed in the hospital for a long time. Ramadan has also arrived, and I was unable to make up the missed fasts or fast the current month of Ramadan, 1398 AH. Please guide me.
A: If the situation is as you described, namely that your illness is severe and persistent, that you are still under treatment, and that you find yourself unable to fast, and the doctor has ordered you not to fast—then there is no blame on you
for not fasting. In fact, breaking the fast may be obligatory for you due to the severity of the illness and your need for treatment. If Allah heals you and you become able to fast, you must make up the days you did not fast or the month you did not fast. Allah the Exalted said:
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardshipشَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنْـزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْهُدَى وَالْفُرْقَانِ فَمَنْ شَهِدَ مِنْكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلاَ يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
If your illness persists, or if you are healed but weakness and inability to make up the fasts persist, and you despair of that, may Allah forbid it—then feed one poor person for each day with half a sa' of wheat, dates, rice, or other food that your family eats. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
