Naming with the Name Fath al-Bari
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 6243 )
Q: I have had a child whom I named (Fath al-Bari), and he is now ten years old. I am seeking your ruling on the Shari'ah status of this name in terms of permissibility or prohibition, and whether it is obligatory in the Shari'ah to change this compound name to a common name, such as Nayif, Thawab, or Fathi, after it has been registered in official documents? Please inform us of this.
A: It is permissible to use the name mentioned (Fath al-Bari), and there is no blame in doing so; because it means: grace, or an opening from al-Bari (Glorified and Exalted is He). And if you wish to change it to another name, such as 'Abd al-Rahman, or 'Abd Allah, there is no blame on you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
