The Elderly Man and the Asthma Patient in Ramadan

Fatwa No. ( 4811 )
Q: I am a man advanced in age , approaching ninety years old, and I suffer from asthma and high blood pressure. I was able to fast until last year, but weakness compelled me to break my fast for sixteen days. I intended to make them up when I recovered, but I am still unable to do so, and I fear that Ramadan will arrive and I will still be unable to fast. Therefore, I ask you to inform me of what the Shari'ah deems appropriate regarding the fidyah for the days that have passed and those that will come? As for the fidyah, which is feeding the poor, if that is obligatory, what is the amount for feeding one poor person? And if there are currently no poor people who accept charity, is it permissible to give money instead of food? And what is the amount if that is valid? And is it distributed daily or collected until the end of the month?
A: If the situation is as you described, that you are approaching ninety years old and have asthma and high blood pressure with you at this age, and that you broke your fast for sixteen days in last Ramadan and are still unable to make them up, then it is not obligatory for you to make them up, and you are granted a dispensation to break your fast as long as you remain in a state of inability. You must feed one poor person for every day you broke your fast. You may give it all at once, or you may distribute it separately; for Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Hajj 22:78] And giving money in place of
feeding is not sufficient for you. The amount paid for each day is half a sa' of wheat, dates, barley, or the like of the staple food of the country. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
