The fourth question of Fatwa number ( 2251 )
Q4: People have differed regarding supplication after the funeral prayer, done continuously and in congregation. One group held that it is a religious innovation (bid'ah) because there is no report of it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or his noble Companions, and the jurists explicitly stated that it is not permissible. Another group held that it is recommended (mustahabb) and a recommended practice (sunnah). Which of them is on the right?
A4: Supplication is a form of worship, and acts of worship are based on what has been prescribed by revelation. Therefore, it is not permissible for anyone to worship Allah with what He has not prescribed. It is not established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated with his Companions over a grave after finishing the prayer for the deceased. What is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he would stand at the grave after it was leveled over the deceased and say:Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani). Based on the foregoing, it is clear that the correct view is that it is not permissible to supplicate in a collective manner after finishing the prayer for the deceased, and that this is a religious innovation (bid'ah). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now.
