Supplication after the obligatory prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 2251 )
Q3: People have differed regarding supplication after the regular voluntary prayers in a congregational setting. One group says: Nothing has been transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or the Companions regarding this, and if it had been good, they would have preceded us to it, for they were the most eager people to follow the truth. Another group says: Supplication after the regular voluntary prayers in a congregational setting is recommended and encouraged, indeed it is a sunnah; because it is remembrance and worship, and every remembrance and worship is at least recommended and a sunnah. These people criticize those who do not wait for the supplication and stand up after finishing the prayer.
A3: Supplication is a form of worship, and acts of worship are based on divine legislation, so it is not permissible to say that this act of worship is prescribed in terms of its origin, its number, its forms, or its place, except with a legal proof indicating that. We do not know of any sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this matter, neither from his saying, nor his doing, nor his approval, that indicates what the second group claimed. All good lies in following his guidance (peace and blessings be upon him), and his guidance (peace and blessings be upon him) in this chapter is established by the proofs indicating what he used to do (peace and blessings be upon him) after the taslim. His successors and his Companions after him, and those who followed them with excellence, practiced this. Whoever innovates something contrary to the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), it is rejected from him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
Therefore, the imam who supplicates after the taslim
and the followers respond to his supplication with "Ameen," and everyone raises their hands—he is required to provide proof establishing his action, otherwise it is rejected from him. Likewise, whoever does that after the voluntary prayers is required to provide proof, as Allah the Exalted said in a similar matter:
Say, "Produce your proof, if you should be truthful."قُلْ هَاتُوا بُرْهَانَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:111]
, and we do not know any proof from the Book or from the Sunnah indicating the legitimacy of what the second group claimed regarding gathering for supplication and remembrance in the manner mentioned in the question. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
