Supplication for the one who kills himself

Fatwa number ( 11120 )
Q: I am a Sudanese Muslim, by the praise of Allah, and I have been working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for years. Recently, the post brought me news of the death of one of my relatives in Sudan by suicide, meaning he killed himself, may Allah protect us from that. I sent a letter of condolence to his family in Sudan and offered prayers for him. At the same time, I sent a letter to one of my relatives working in the United Arab Emirates , informing him of the incident and the letter I had sent. He replied objecting to sending a letter of condolence for the one who killed himself and offering prayers for him. The question I want to ask, so that you may inform me with a clear fatwa, is: Is it permissible in the Shari'ah to offer condolences to the family of the one who kills himself? And is it permissible to offer prayers for him? What is the evidence from the Book and the Sunnah?

A: It is forbidden for a Muslim to kill himself. Allah the Exalted said:
and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]وَلاَ تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:195]
And Allah the Exalted said:
And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful. (30) And whoever does that in aggression and injustice - then We will drive him into a Fire. And that, for Allah, is [always] easy.
[An-Nisa 4:29-30]
It is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If anyone kills himself with something, he will be punished with it on the Day of Resurrection.من قتل نفسه بشيء عذب به يوم القيامة
Sunan Abi Dawud 3257Sahih (Al-Albani)
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim and others. Whoever commits suicide has committed a major sin and is exposed to the punishment of Allah. However, it is permissible to offer prayers for him and to supplicate for him, just as it is permissible to offer condolences to his family and relatives; because he did not become a disbeliever by killing himself. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
